Workers won’t vote for governors who owe salary – Labour leader

The General Secretary, Textile Union Workers, Mr Isa Aremu, on Wednesday, said the 2019 election would be determined by the dignity of labour and commitment in payment of workers’ salary.

Aremu said this in an interview in response to government’s plan to raise workers’ salary after negotiation by the newly inaugurated 30-member committee on new minimum wage.

According to him, governors who refuse to pay the salary of workers as and when due and those who criminalise workers on account of deficiency in skill will not get workers’ votes.

He added that labour would be partisan and political in its interest, based on those who paid salary.

“Dignity of labour will not be ensured if workers are not paid when due. Workers have the right to employment,” he added.

The general secretary said labour would conduct competence test for governors with a view to judging them based on their indices.

“It will involve skills like: ‘do you pay workers when due; Do you engage workers in social dialogue or in dictatorship policies? among others,” Aremu said.

He noted that for the country to properly recover from recession, workers’ salary must be increased.

He advised the 30-member minimum wage committee inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari not to spend more than six months to dialogue as lots of time had already gone by.

2018 Budget Proposal Is Fictitious, Says Abaribe

2018 budget proposal is fictitious, says Abaribe*

The lawmaker representing Abia South Senatorial District, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, has described the 2018 Appropriation Bill presented to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari, as fictitious.

The debate on the 2018 budget proposal started on a dramatic note at the plenary on Tuesday when the first speaker, Abaribe, dismissed the 2018 budget proposal as “fictitious.” The Majority Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan, however, retorted by raising a point of order to fault Abaribe for describing a bill presented by President Muhammadu Buhari as “fictitious.” Lawan urged the lawmaker to withdraw the word “fictitious” and use another word that was “parliamentary and acceptable.”

Withdrawing the word, Abaribe, however, insisted on his position, saying, “I am just quoting the Senate Leader from his speech, which said in the 2018 budget was designed to consolidate on the achievements of the 2016 and 2017 budgets. What was done in 2017 when less than 15 percent of that budget was released. Nothing was done and that was why I called it (2018 budget proposal) fictitious.”

Man charged with attempted murder of 96-year-old D-Day veteran

A man has been charged with the attempted murder of a D-Day veteran who suffered life-threatening injuries in a suspected claw hammer attack in his home.

Joseph Isaacs, 39, of no fixed address, has also been charged with aggravated burglary in connection with the incident and will appear at Taunton Deane Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Jim Booth, 96, was allegedly attacked at his home in Taunton, Somerset, on Wednesday.

Mr Booth, who was photographed dancing with the Duchess of Cornwall at an event to mark the 70th anniversary of VJ Day, was left with serious injuries to his head and body.

In a statement released through police, his family thanked officers and medical staff.

"He is the head of the family, a dearly-loved father to his four children and adored by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to whom he's simply known as The Legend," they said.

"He is, and always has been, our own family hero."

On his condition, they said: "Our father is not easily defeated and he grows a little stronger each day.

"We are all now focused on the long process of recovery, which will be helped by the love and support of all those around him."

Mr Booth joined the Royal Navy as a seaman aged 18 and served throughout the Second World War.

On D-Day, he climbed into a fold-up canoe and shone a beacon out to sea so Allied craft could make it to the shore.

Mr Booth was awarded a Croix de Guerre military medal by France for his bravery during the conflict.

Ikoyi Whistle-blower Rejects FG’s N325m, Insists On N860m Percentage.

The whistle-blower that gave information to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that led to the recovery of money from an Ikoyi apartment has insisted he will not take less than 5 per cent of it.
The whistle-blower’s information had led to the recovery of $43m, N23.2m and £27,800 (N13bn) from an apartment in Ikoyi and insists in being paid N860m as being promised by the federal government.
The Secretary of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, who was also part of the committee that drafted the whistle-blower policy spoke at an even on Thursday, November 23 where he said someone could be paid less than 2.5 per cent.
He said: “If you blow the whistle and the government recovers cash, you are entitled to between 2.5 per cent and five per cent. The maximum limit is five per cent.
“According to the policy, if you blow the whistle and it is below N500m, you get four to five per cent because the higher the amount that is recovered, the lower the percentage that is given. This is the global best practice.
“If the recovery is between N500m and N1bn, you get three to four per cent (commission).
If it is N1bn and above, it is 2.5 per cent. Indeed, there is a clause that we included in the policy to say that the government may determine the amount to be awarded based on other criteria provided that the amount to be awarded doesn’t exceed five per cent.
In other words, the government may actually pay less than 2.5 per cent but nobody can be paid more than five per cent.”
The Punch reports that Yakubu Galadima who is the lawyer of the whistle-blower insisted that he client will not take anything less than 5 per cent.
He said the amount his client was expecting was N860m and not N325m.
He also said his client must be paid based on the exchange rate f that period and not the current one. Meanwhile, two different men are currently in a fight for the N850 million whistle-blower’s commission from the Ikoyi Mansion cash recovery.
Ownership of the cash took a new twist on Tuesday, November 14, when the principal whistle-blower, Stephen Sunday, alleged plot by some individuals to dissolve his entitlement.

Iran warns Europe: We can increase missile range

The deputy head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards has warned Europe that it could increase the range of its missiles.

In comments reported by the Fars news agency, Brigadier General Hossein Salami said: "If we have kept the range of our missiles to 2,000 kilometres, its not due to lack of technology.

"We are following a strategic doctrine.

"So far we have felt that Europe is not a threat, so we did not increase the range of our missiles.

"But if Europe wants to turn into a threat, we will increase the range of our missiles."

It was not clear whether Mr Hossein was reacting to a particular European action or speech but France has previously called for tough talks with Iran about its ballistic missile programme.

Iran has repeatedly promised the programme is for its own defence.

But the US says Iran is breaching international law, as some of its missiles could one day carry nuclear warheads, something Iran denies.

Head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari, said in October that the country's 2,000km (1,240 mile) missile range covered "most of American interest and forces".

"Our missiles' range is 2,000 kilometres (1,200 miles), and that can be increased, but we believe this range is enough for the Islamic Republic as most of the U.S. forces and most of their interests in the region are within this range," Jafari was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency.

"Americans are trying to impose new sanctions against the Revolutionary Guards for its missile program, but that is an excuse to harm Iran's economy."

The US House of Representatives voted in October for new sanctions on Iran's ballistic missile programme.

US President Donald Trump has called for allies to join him in stopping Iran's "continued dangerous and destabilising behaviour".

Yemi Alade Angry At Sarkodie For Disrespecting Her

Music Diva, Yemi Alade is disappointed in Ghanian rapper, Sarkodie for snubbing her managements approach to him for a joint project in the past.

Yemi who recently released the album art and track-listing of her third studio album “Black Magic“ was on the Starr Chat show on Wednesday where she discussed the issue.

She said she was once a big fan of Ghanaian rapper, but has stopped being his fan ever since that event played out which she tagged “unprofessional” attitude.

“I’ve really tried my best to really not go into details but the long and short on why I don’t want to dwell on this is that is super unfair, unprofessional and unkind for international acts or even artistes to have a dealing with anybody and after agreeing to certain things, you don’t come through at all,” she lamented.

“I can count three different countries and three different venues where my team and I had an agreement with the artiste ( Sarkodie ) in particular and he didn’t come through.

“I don’t want to bring in the feminine and masculine inequality we’re experiencing in the industry and I don’t want to link it to that.

I was pained as a person but I’ll say it is almost impossible to promote a project that is supposed to be for two people when the other party isn’t coming through at all, the music pretty much suffers.”

She added that she felt disgraced by Sarkodie ’s attitude, especially after she tried to reach him on three different shows where he performed

Notwithstanding, She further explained that she is not looking for an apology from the Ghanaian rapper and BET winner, that she is “cool and not bothered at all”.
